Duck Hunting

Duck Hunting General Tips and Truths

Take young person duck hunting often each season. By doing so we will each help preserve our proud hunting heritage through education and leadership. Rest assure we will gain as much as we gave.
After you shoot a duck or goose go pick it up right after it falls so that the other ducks or geese don't see the dead ones.
Before you get in the duck boat or blind, if you are in open water tell your hunting partner which bird you are going to take before they come in to light so you wont be shooting at the same one. It will help out in some conditions.
If you are going to shoot at the duck, make sure it is in range and kill it!  It's a lot better than just wasting shells and making noise.
If you have that problem of too much stuff to carry including the gun and the decoys buy a sling; then place the gun on your back then put the decoys on your back it will make things a lot lighter, and also free up your hands for more stuff.
To all waterfowl hunters out there this is a good and sensible tip that should hold true for all of you. If we hunt ducks every fall and then put nothing back into them, they won't be around for very long. Donate money or time to your local waterfowl chapters that help waterfowl survive in many different ways. You can even do it yourself by putting up nesting structures or in other manners. Just make sure that we give and not just take.
On your next hunt take along a few 30 gallon plastic trash bags. They will come in handy to protect clothing and other gear from the rain, provide a make shift rain coat, decoy bag, game bag, gun case, tie down and field decoy. Plus, they are good for carrying trash out of the field or your blind too.
Spray on silicone lubricants, like WD40 or RemOil, can do more than just prevent your firearms from rusting and loosen frozen bolts. A squirt or two into the carburetor helps to start an outboard on a cold morning. At the end of the season a generous spray into the carburetor of your motor helps to prevent rust and varnishing of critical parts of the carburetor. On your hunting trips, keep a can of lubricant in the boat for the motor's sake and for those miscellaneous needs that seem to always arise on duck hunt.
Tired of wet shell boxes? I use my Foodsaver to seal spare shells, an emergency kit, stamps/licenses etc. It sure is nice to have at least 1 or 2 dry things when your in a blind!
When I go hunting I always carry my repair kit for neoprene waders. You never know when that little hole in your waders can make a cold day of hunting in the field even worse.
Get a lab and enjoy duck hunting more, training helps the long off season go a lot better.  You also will gain a friend.
When you put on your waders and the sweats or whatever ride up. Try sewing two pieces of elastic to the bottom of the pants and then put them around the bottom of your feet before putting on your waders then they won't ride.
When I duck hunt I am always prepared for the worse weather. I wear a pair of stockings under all of my clothes and it keeps my legs warm.
When practicing with my dogs in the summer, I like to use the 1 liter pop bottles to throw out in the water. You can fill them with water of different amounts to float either high or low in the water. My dogs love fetching them.
For all you duck hunters who keep your dog in the back of the pickup. My Lab didn't enjoy sliding around in the bed at all. If yours doesn't like it either, just take a standard sheet of plywood (cut it to fit your bed if needed) and cover it with some outdoor carpet. It staples down easy. The whole thing slides out when you don't want it. Your dog will thank you. As an added bonus, other stuff doesn't slide as much either.
When duck hunting I always carry one leg from a pair of panty hose. You never know when you are going to shoot that rare duck. By placing the duck head first in the panty hose you keep all the feathers in place. it works really well.
Ask your local grocery store for an old hand basket most are earth tone or easy to camo use for carrying ducks in boats and cuts down on birds freezing to the boat and cuts down on feathers in the boat.
One of the best tools you can bring into the duck boat is a 5 gallon bucket that has been painted camouflage.  It holds all sorts of equipment, such as the first aid kit, matches, shells and spare clothes.  If you use a food grade bucket that held liquid the bucket will keep all the items dry.  The bucket also acts as a great seat.
When duck hunting, keep your wallet in a ziploc bag in your pocket. This will keep it from getting wet should you discover your waders are shorter than you thought!
